136 Irish Horse Trainers and Motivational Interviewing by Omega Fields
We reunite two Irish trainers who met while working on the gallops of the Emerald Isle. Thoroughbred training is a historical part of the horse culture of Ireland. Also, I recently sat down with Dr. Bill Miller, founder of Motivational Interviewing which helps people identify issues that block or inspire change. He was facilitating an Equine-Assisted introduction to Motivational Interviewing focusing on change behavior using horses as the professors, a type of equine therapy. Listen in…

I love to listen and am inspired by your broadcasts. Episode 136 particularly struck a chord. I worked in a small, privately owned TB Stud for over a year and adored being there, but the things I witnessed eventually meant I could no longer be a part of it, so I left.
Outwardly a picturesque, well run yard, the bullying of the mares and even the foals was heart-breaking. It was so sad those horses, through lack of trust and confidence in humans, have not fulfilled their full potential. I did my best, quietly working in their day to day care; leading, grooming, first aid and I was often sent ahead to catch the ‘difficult’ yearlings.
I felt very isolated in my refusal to use force. As Claire Connaghan said, ‘This is just how it’s done’ and ‘When you try to intervene, it gets worse’.
Then one day, the owner told me she had seen an ‘incredible demonstration’ at a US Stud Farm, by Monty Roberts trained staff. I was so encouraged, but she didn’t know how to impliment a different routine and knew most of her staff would resist this and ‘a leopard does not change it’s spots’, referring to her Stud manager.
Despite no longer working there, I am still in touch with the owner and have offered to take her to a Monty Demo, which she seems keen to do. Can I let you know? Would Monty consider encouraging her? She and her husband are very well known in
UK flat racing – they even had an Oaks winner who is now one of the brood mares.
I understand if this is too much to ask.
Please continue to inspire people. Thank you, Liz
Hi Liz,
I’m so sorry I’ve just seen this. I don’t get alerts but will ask if it’s possible.
Monty would love to encourage her, yes. How do you think it best done?
