212 by HandsOnGloves: Arabian Legend Sheila Varian & Ebony Horsewomen Founder
We re-visit the interview with Sheila Varian (August 8, 1937 – March 6, 2016) of Varian Arabians since 1954. She used vaquero-influenced methods of training horses, although she adapted her technique to fit the character of the Arabian horse which she viewed as requiring a smart yet gentle approach. We were privileged to record her commitment to the horses first. Patricia E. Kelly founded Ebony Horsewomen, Inc. an equestrian nonprofit community-service organization, operated by African American female equestrians whose mission is to encourage and empower youth toward positive and successful lives through the use of horses and Equine Assisted Therapy since 1984.
